Hand piecing my “Family Quilt”

I started quilting 18 years ago in The Netherlands when my husband was in the Air Force. My hobby at the time was crocheting. A neighbor of mine asked me to come to their weekly quilting group. I said “quilting? I don’t know how to quilt!” She asked me if I could sew a button or hem pants? I said “sure I can”. And she said ”then you can quilt!!”

At the time I began quilting most of us were learning  hand piecing and hand quilting.  Only a few of the ladies in the group machine pieced. We would cut out the paper shapes and make templates from cardboard (saved cereal boxes) then trace each piece onto the back of the fabric. This could be hundreds of pieces of fabric, depending on how many blocks were needed and we would cut out each piece by hand. It was very time consuming but somehow so satisfying and relaxing to see the pieces fit together to form each block.

I only hand piece my quilt projects every now and then. I love the history behind it. It takes me back in time. Now I usually machine piece my projects, the seams are stronger when machine pieced and you get a top done much quicker. I  love my rotary cutter and mat and strip piecing is the best!!!

The last quilt I hand pieced and hand quilted is a quilt that hangs on my bedroom wall. It took me 2 years to finish it. It was started in 1993 and finished in 1995.  It is my “Family Quilt”  It is comprised of 16 blocks, one for each member of my family and a couple for places we lived. For example my block is called “June Bride” and was pieced using colors that were in my wedding. The first block I made for the quilt was called “Star Sapphire” and was pieced using blues and cream. This block is for my oldest son Bryan whose birthday is in September.

The four center blocks are for me, my husband and our 2 children at the time. The other 12 blocks that surround our 4 blocks are for family and places we’ve lived. It is my favorite quilt to date!! I’ll post a picture soon!!

Annual “Amishland” girl’s getaway

It’s 4:15 AM and I’m waiting for Denise to pick me up for our 6 hour drive to Philadelphia. We are going to pick up the rest of our gang at the Philadelphia Airport for our annual “Amishland” girls shopping trip in Lancaster Co., PA. Denise and I like to drive there and the others like to fly. It works out because we need a car anyway once we get there. The car is loaded with the girls bags and our pillows and snacks for the drive. Denise arrives and we are so excited!! We stop for coffee and we are off. Six hours fly by, believe it or not, we talk non stop, make one stop for gas and a potty break and we are off again.

Before we know it Marie is calling to tell us they landed. We arrive at the airport and the gang is united, all 6 of us!! Suzie, Betsy, Florence, Marie, Denise and me! Our first stop, as always, Shady Maple Smorgasbord!!!! As we travel closer to the restaurant the excitement builds. We are all on the lookout for the first horse and buggy spotting. We come up over a rise in the road and the countryside opens up in front of us and in unison we sigh and take in the beauty.

After a lovely lunch at the smorgasbord we head downstairs to the gift shop and poke around. Then it was time to head to our lodging for the next few days.  We rented a house this trip instead of staying a a hotel. It was fabulous!!! Amish neighbors, a beautiful view of Amish farmland  and we could hear the clippity-clop of the horse and buggies constantly. Heaven!!

Each morning we got up, had a light breakfast in our beautiful kitchen and planned our day of shopping sites. We visited some of our favorite stops and this year found a few new stops thanks to an Amish bus tour we decided to take. Each ride back to the house had the back of the car filled with bags. We purchased fabric mostly but brought home some Amish baked goods as well as some other crafts and treats. I found Moda charm packs at great prices to make a custom weekender bags.

The last day in Amishland the girls flight wasn’t until the afternoon so we loaded the car with our luggage and our purchases and had breakfast in town at our favorite diner “among the people”. It’s great, the servers are Amish women and some of the patrons are Amish too. After breakfast we stopped at some of our favorite spots again for last minute items to bring home.

Denise and I dropped off the girls at the airport and we set the GPS for home. It was around 10:00 that night when we got home. We unloaded everything into my dining room. Suzie and Marie came by to collect everything and bring it home or deliver it to Betsy and Florence.

Can’t wait until next years girl’s getaway!!!
